Places that are worth a visit in Milton Keynes
When people think of Milton Keynes, they usually picture roundabouts, shopping centres, or Willen Lake. But our city holds secrets, quiet places that even lifelong residents may not know about. These hidden gems remind me why our city is such a special place to live.
One of the most atmospheric is Stanton Low. Tucked beside the River Ouse are the ruins of St Peter’s Church, dating back to medieval times. It’s a peaceful spot to walk, especially at sunset, with a real sense of history that connects us to the communities who lived here long before Milton Keynes was built.
Equally surprising is Elfield Nature Park, hidden behind Stadium MK. Few realise that this quiet reserve exists right next to the bustle of football crowds and shopping trips. It’s closed to cars and often empty, which makes it a perfect space for reflection and spotting wildlife.
For those who love ancient woodland, Little Linford Wood is a true treasure. Managed by the Berks, Bucks and Oxon Wildlife Trust, it bursts with bluebells every spring. Standing there among the flowers, you’d hardly believe you’re minutes away from the M1.
Here’s another place you could visit, and that’s Bradwell Abbey. Nestled in an industrial estate. It’s easy to miss, but behind the fences are the remains of a medieval priory and a chapel that has stood for more than 800 years. It’s a hidden piece of history in the heart of modern MK.
And of course, we can’t forget the quirky side of our city. Many have seen the replicas of the Concrete Cows at Bancroft, but the originals are tucked away at Milton Keynes Museum, lovingly preserved. They’re part of our story as a new town that dared to be different.
These places aren’t just curiosities, in fact they tell the deeper story of Milton Keynes. A city that is young, but layered with history, nature, and creativity. By exploring these hidden corners, we discover not just new views, but also a stronger connection to the place we call home.
Milton Keynes is full of surprises. Sometimes, you just need to take a different turn to find them.
