Residents are being asked to take a few minutes to contact a friend, relative, neighbour, colleague, or volunteer and tell them why they’re appreciated.

Evidence suggests there are five steps we can all take to improve our mental wellbeing. Two of which are Connect and Give.

Connect: maintaining health relationships with people we trust is important, talking about how we’re feeling or having a catch up can help us stay connected.

Give: a small act of kindness such as a smile, a thoughtful message or saying thank you, can help people feel valued and support mental wellbeing.

Liberal Democrat Councillor Wing Tsang, the City Council’s Mental Health Champion, said:

“Our city is full of people who quietly make life better for others every day, from family members, friends and neighbours to carers, teachers, volunteers and frontline workers.

“World Gratitude Day is an opportunity to pause and make sure these people know how much they are appreciated. A genuine thank you might seem like a small gesture, but it can go a long way, it can help someone feel noticed, valued and less alone.

“Gratitude is not a replacement for professional mental health support, but it can be a positive everyday habit that helps us connect with others and build kinder, more supportive communities.

“I want to encourage everyone in Milton Keynes to think of one person who has helped them and take a moment to tell them. It could be a message, a phone call or a conversation over a tea or coffee.”

Councillor Tsang, who represents Broughton and Moulsoe ward, has pledged to use her role as Mental Health Champion to raise awareness of the support available in across the city and help residents understand where they can turn to when they need help.

Milton Keynes Liberal Democrats are encouraging residents to share their messages of appreciation on social media using #ThankYouMK.

Anyone experiencing significant emotional or mental distress should call NHS 111 and select the mental health option. If someone’s life is at immediate risk, call 999 or go to A&E.
