Lib Dems and Labour form partnership to lead Milton Keynes City Council
The partnership agreement brings together the Council’s two largest groups, with the Liberal Democrats holding 20 seats and Labour holding 19 seats. Together, they form a stable majority focused on providing strong leadership and delivering for communities across Milton Keynes.
The agreement is built around shared commitments, putting residents first, protecting vital local services and ensuring the city continues to move forward. By working together, both Groups will focus on the issues that matter most to local people while providing stability and continuity for Milton Keynes.
At last night’s Annual Council meeting, Councillor Jane Carr, Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group, was elected Leader of Milton Keynes City Council, and Councillor Lauren Townsend, Leader of the Labour Group, was appointed Deputy Leader of Milton Keynes City Council. Responsibility for leading the city will also be shared through a balanced Cabinet made up of councillors from both groups.
Councillor Jane Car, Milton Keynes Liberal Democrats Leader and Leader of Milton Keynes City Council, said:
“This partnership is about putting the people of Milton Keynes first. People want strong leadership and a Council focused on delivering the things that matter most in everyday life. Residents expect local leaders to work together, put differences aside where they can and get on with delivering for communities.
“While we remain two distinct political groups with our own priorities and ideas, we share a commitment to protecting vital services, supporting local communities and doing what is right for Milton Keynes. Where we have common goals, we will work together in the best interests of residents.”
Cllr Lauren Townsend, Leader of MK Labour and Deputy Leader of Milton Keynes City Council, said:
“While no party secured a majority, it is important that we work constructively to provide stable leadership for our city. At a time when so much in our country seeks to divide communities, we are committed to standing together to ensure Milton Keynes remains a diverse, progressive, and forward-thinking city.
“We are looking forward to working closely in partnership with the Milton Keynes Liberal Democrats to build on the progress we have made and continue ensuring Milton Keynes City Council is recognised as a ‘well run’ authority. This partnership is about cooperation, responsibility, and delivering for residents.”
