£9.8m hit for small Milton Keynes businesses following more Tory broken promises

The bill aims to make trading simpler and easier for businesses across Milton Keynes and elsewhere, many of which continue to face costly post-Brexit barriers.

According to estimates reported by The Guardian, a UK-EU customs union could boost the national economy by more than £25 billion a year, unlocking growth and supporting businesses in cities like Milton Keynes.

Local Liberal Democrat councillors say that a new customs union would not only help local employers to create more jobs, but it would also put money back into residents’ pockets through lower costs and stronger economic growth.

Lib Dem Spokesperson for Economic Development and Business Growth, Councillor Sam Crooks, said:

“Milton Keynes is already leading charge nationally, and we’re fortunate to have so many talented entrepreneurs strengthening our local economy. We’re hopeful that the bill will gain royal assent and if so, it will help businesses build on their success and keep the city’s economy strong.”

In September, a national study analysing 50 UK cities on their ability to embrace and advance future industries ranked Milton Keynes in fourth place, highlighting the city’s strength and potential.

The UK-EU Customs Union Bill is due to have its second reading in the House of Commons soon.
