Naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham congratulates Dominic Dyer on his selection as the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary candidate for the new seat of Buckingham and Bletchley

The Liberal Democrats have selected the leading wildlife protection and environment campaigner, writer and broadcaster Dominic Dyer as their Parliamentary candidate for the new seat of Buckingham and Bletchley at the next General Election.

Dominic who has lived in Milton Keynes for 23 years has had a wide-ranging career working in the agriculture, food manufacturing, plant science and conservation sectors in Whitehall, Westminster, European Commission and in leadership roles in the corporate, charity and conservation fields.

Unlike many conservationists, he became a wildlife protection and environment campaigner after a career in government and industry using the skills he acquired in Whitehall, Brussels, and the corporate board room to fight for the protection of wildlife and nature at home and abroad.

Dominic was CEO of the Badger Trust from 2013 to 2020 and is currently Policy Advisor and Wildlife Advocate at the Born Free Foundation and a Board member of Wildlife and Countryside Link.

In April 2023 Dominic was also appointed as Chair of Nature 2030, an increasingly influential forum for bringing industry, NGO's and environmental campaigners together to focus on tacking climate change, biodiversity and species loss at home and abroad.

He played a key role in organising and launching the first Nature 2030 Political Progress Awards in Parliament along with Chris Packham CBE in September 2023.

Dominic is a Director and Fellow of the British American Project and an Alumni of the Council for the United Stated and Italy and a media commentator on the transatlantic relationship.

Dominic is a regular speaker at wildlife protection, animal welfare and environment conferences and debates and a contributor to the print and broadcast media on a wide range of issues relating to the protection of animals, wildlife and the natural world and the future of farming and food production.

Speaking on his selection as a candidate, naturalist and broadcaster Chris Packham CBE said:

"I must congratulate Dominic Dyer on being selected as one of the Parliamentary candidates in his home seat of Buckingham & Bletchley Dominic is a passionate, inspiring and increasingly influential voice for protecting animals, wildlife and the natural world and we desperately need more people like him in Parliament.

"Recent polling carried out by the wildlife trusts from within their membership and the wider public found that 93% of people believe that destruction of nature and climate breakdown are serious threats to humanity and that these should be key priorities for the next government.

"I wish Dominic every success in engaging with voters on these critical issues in Buckingham & Bletchley and I trust his selection as a candidate will send a clear message to all political parties - that nature and biodiversity loss and the need to tackle water pollution & climate breakdown , are crucial concerns that could swing millions of environmentally conscious voters at the next election”

Speaking on his priorities as a Parliamentary candidate Dominic Dyer said:

"I have worked with politicians from all political parties in my 30 year career in government, industry and the environment sector, but in all this time I have never seen a Government as incompetent, negligent and deceitful as this one.

"We need political change in this country and I believe the Liberal Democrats can help deliver it. I want to focus on three key issues as the local candidate for Buckingham and Bletchley

  • Cost of living crisis
  • Environment and climate change crisis
  • Crisis of confidence in our political institutions and democracy

"I will run a high-profile campaign that engages and inspires people of all ages, backgrounds and political views focusing on issues of both local and national concern from protecting the future of the NHS to affordable housing, planning and transport infrastructure and protecting the environment.

"In December 2023 I chaired a summit in New York of leading pioneers in the tech industry to focus on how we can use artificial intelligence (AI) to create a sustainable future for humanity and I look forward to engaging with Bletchley Park in the constituency to carry forward this debate, following the groundbreaking AI Safety Summit they hosted in November 2023

"I look forward to my first speaking engagement as a Parliamentary candidate engaging with students at Milton Keynes college on a wide range of environment protection, climate change, technology and education issues"
