The road was originally closed in September 2023 to allow for works on the Milton Keynes East development site.

At the time, Milton Keynes City Council promised the closure would last just one year, with the scheduled reopening date of 27 September 2024.

Lib Dem councillors say the reopening of the A509 is a huge relief to the community after several months of delays and disruption.

Leader of Milton Keynes Liberal Democrats and ward councillor for Newport Pagnell South Councillor Jane Carr, said:

“The A509 is a vital route into Newport Pagnell. The closure has hurt local businesses and caused daily disruption to residents. People across the town will be glad to see it open at last. It’s a big relief for us knowing that local businesses will benefit from easier access and residents will have smoother journeys in and out of town.”

Councillor Tony Oyakhire fellow ward councillor, added:

“Earlier this year we held the Labour-led City Council to account and demanded answers for the people of Newport Pagnell. The closure was a real headache to residents and understandably so. Whilst its welcome news the road has finally reopened, the lack of proper planning, poor communication with residents, and failure to stick to timetables has caused frustration among local people.”

In February this year, Councillor Andy Carr who represents Newport Pagnell South, asked the Cabinet Member for Public Realm about the timetable for reopening. At the time, the Labour administration was unable to confirm a date.

Furthermore, it was revealed that the City Council had not applied any financial penalties to the contractors working on the MK East development site.

The reopening of the A509 will ease traffic congestion around Newport Pagnell and improve vital connections for both local residents and commuters using Junction 14 and the M1.
